LAWAS, Latin American Workers is a project that will be based at The Studio at the Elephant (Unit 207/208) at the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre from April 10th to 30th.
As an organization, LAWAS has been working to create a framework through which Latin Americans can defend their rights, dignity and well-being as workers. Through this project, we will introduce LAWAS to the Latin American community living, working or passing through the Elephant & Castle area. The central idea is to re-think the orientation of LAWAS, keeping in mind the key issues faced by Latin Americans in the borough. The experiences of those struggling for their rights and dignity as workers is a core element of what LAWAS is about and, through this arts project, we hope to create a space where people can explore the stories, values and feelings behind those experiences. In doing so, the community will have the opportunity to have a voice in addressing issues related to their material, legal and cultural position in Britain.
In order to engage members of the community, we will hold an Integration Party during week one, which will be advertised through broad outreach. Subsequently, the studio will become a centre offering a range of activities to participants, including workshops in dance, theatre and painting, screenings, talks, cooking contests, etc.
All the outputs and visual records produced during these events will be used as part of an ongoing and in continuous growing up exhibition at the Studio, as well as will be used as the basis for a range of publications, including booklets and short films. These publications will then be used by LAWAS to evaluate its activities, as well as in future training and outreach activities.

LAWAS, Trabajadores Latinoamericanos en The Elephant es un proyecto que tendrá lugar en The Studio at the Elephant (Unit 207/208) en el Centro Comercial de Elephant & Castle del 10 de Abril al 30.

Como asociación, Lawas ha un marco de expresión a través del cual los latinoamericanos han podido defender sus derechos, dignidad y bienestar como trabajadores. Con este proyecto, se pretende hacer una introducción de a la comunidad Latinoamericana que vive, trabaja o hace uso del área de Elephant & Castle. La idea principal es re-pensar la orientación de LAWAS, teniendo en cuenta la conceptos clave a los que se enfrentan los Latinoamericanos en el municipio. Las experiencias de aquellos que luchan por sus derechos y dignidad como trabajadores es uno de los componentes principales de LAWAS, a través de este proyecto artístico, esperamos crear un espacio donde la gente pueda analizar sus historias, valores y sentimientos detrás de esta lucha, Así pues, la comunidad disfrutará la oportunidad de hacer oír su voz en relación a cuestiones de su situación material, legal y cultural en Gran Bretaña.

Con el fin de involucrar a la comunidad, comenzaremos nuestra actividad con una Fiesta de Integración durante la primera semana, que se publicitará ampliamente a través de diferentes medios. LAWAS ha desarrollado numerosos vínculos con campañas locales y organizaciones que trabajan con Latinoamericanos en el municipio de Southwark, lo cual nos ayudará a involucrar a la comunidad.

Por otro lado, el estudio se convertirá en el centro de una serie de actividades ofrecidas a los participantes, incluyendo talleres de baile, teatro, pintura, pases de video, charlas, concursos de cocina, etc. El material producido durante estos eventos será usado en una exposición permanente y en continuo crecimiento en el Studio, así como servirá de base para una serie de publicaciones, incluyendo folletos y cortos. Estas publicaciones serán usadas por LAWAS para evaluar sus actividades, así como en para la futura capacitación y actividades de divulgación.
